Sustainability Report 2009

"Our overall goal is to grow sustainably. This will enhance the return to our shareholders, benefit our staff and serve our customers better. In a word, it will deliver greater value for all stakeholders.

To assist our team achieve our goal, we are following a Game Plan, a strategic management system that tracks our performance from four perspectives. Our strategies in each of the Game Plan perspectives form a value chain, starting with our employees who are involved in our internal processes, to our customers and ultimately to our growth.

In 2009, our growth strategy was severely tested. We responded by re-evaluating all items of controllable spend, and by introducing a number of operational changes that have also cut costs; at the same time, new business opportunities were sought – successfully so.

However, taking a wider view, it is good to be part of the global movement to sustainable development. It is good to be able to satisfy needs, whether they are in our communities, in Africa or further afield. And it is good to make sustainable development an integral part of our plans and decision-making. But sustainability is more than this. It acknowledges that business has a ‘triple bottom line’, meaning that companies should be mindful of the impact on the social and environmental areas of its operation, as well as the economic.

The social aspect is about people, both our staff and our communities; it cares about their health and safety, their development, and the sustainability of their livelihoods. The environmental aspect is about minimising our impact on our surrounding ecosystems, to protect them for future generations.

I encourage all our stakeholders to be aware of our commitment to sustainability, and to partner with NCP Alcohols on the road ahead."
